If you haven’t already made the move to New Zealand and need to find a job before you get there, Careers Fairs / Migration Expos are a highly effective tool for you to take advantage of.

Careers Fairs offer you the opportunity to meet with New Zealand employers who are willing to sponsor foreign nationals and who are actively seeking skilled candidates who are willing to migrate to New Zealand.

For many people, recruitment/migration New Zealand expos have meant the beginning of their new life in New Zealand.

If you are dreaming of living and working in New Zealand, and feel that its about time that you did something about it, we highly recommned that you find out when the next New Zealand Expo is near you, and book to attend.

At these events, you can speak with representatives from Immigration New Zealand, as well as speak with New Zealand migration experts to have your questions answered about migrating to New Zealand.

Migrating to New Zealand is so much more than applying for a visa.  These New Zealand expos offer you the opportunity to also find out about shipping and relocating your belongings (and animals) to New Zealand, as well as foreign exchange experts that can guide on your best options for sending your money safely and with the least costs, to New Zealand.

To find out about the nearest migration or recruitment expo or international careers fair near you, and to book your place so you do not miss out (these events often sell out) do a Google search for New Zealand recruitment expos and New Zealand migration expos in your country to find the dates of the next events and make sure you attend.

Writing a Resume For New Zealand

Posted by nabthatjobinnz on May 10, 2010 at 7:20 PM Comments comments (2)

Have you done the CV Assessment and determined that your CV might not quite meet the expectations of New Zealand employers?  If so, you're probably wondering what's next - how can I now write a resume that will be competitive in New Zealand?

If this sounds like where you're at, then we recommend that you purchase the eGuide, "New Zealand Resumes: Secrets Revealed".  This eGuide will teach you from start to finish how to write an effective and competitive resume for New Zealand, and includes 15 of our proven NZ resume templates for you to use.

However, to give you some tips on things to keep in mind, read on.

First Section

The start of your CV should clearly state your name and contact details, including your email address, and the international dialling codes included with your telephone number.  The reason being, if you are overseas, it is most likely that New Zealand recruiters and employers will firstly contact you by email, particularly if they would like to clarify any additional information with you.

Also, including the international dialling code from New Zealand in front of your telephone number will create a situation where it is easy for recruiting managers to dial you number for an interview, rather than having search the international dialling codes themselves first.  You want to make it as easy as possible for employers and recruiters to contact you.

Objectives / Career Summary

Next on your CV should be information about your career to date, and where you are headed.  This should be a brief and concise summary full of facts, rather than 'fluff', and should be no more than 2-3 short sentences filled with action verbs and power words.  Include possible contributions that you can make to the company, and also your function and level of responsibility you would like to take.

Education & Training

Many other countries in the world as standard, include their education details later in the resume - towards the back.  This is not what is expected in New Zealand.

Following your Objectives / Career Summary, should be your Education.  It is important to list this early on in your New Zealand resume, as your education level is a heavy indication factor in the job you are applying for.

Dates of attendance/graduation are important to include, however, it is not necessary to go into depth with your grades and subjects studied.  Additional courses and special skills could also be included.   Add awards and honours, internships and membership in professional organizations that are relevant to the job or industry within which you are applying.

Work Experience / History

Your work experience should be the next item on your New Zealand CV, including starting and leaving dates, job title, and the name, location and focus of each company.  If you have a website for your companies, you may also include these.

You should include concise details of what each job entailed, your responsibilities, emphasising the duties/responsibilities that are relevant to the job you are applying for.

It is sometimes useful to provide a brief overview of the employer’s business including industry sector, what they do, and company size.  This will help the New Zealand employers to put your experience into perspective.

Be sure to provide examples with each of your responsibility statements, to illustrate your achievements.  Also include power words and action verbs (i.e. contributed, organised, demonstrated, trained, managed, developed, coordinated), and use bullet points to keep information organised and easy to read.

Skills and Abilities

Your New Zealand CV should include a section detailing your skills and abilities relevant to the job you are applying for, and written in short, sharp, bullet point form.

Skills can come from all areas including work or voluntary experience, university or other academic study, or outside interests and activities, so long as they are relevant to the jobs you are applying for and support your application.

References

You should close your CV with references, which are often referred to as "Referees" in New Zealand.  You should include referees from your most recent employment (last 2-4 jobs), and be sure to contact each referee to ensure they are happy to provide references for you.  Be sure to also select referees you are confident will provide positive references for you.

If you prefer not to include you referee's details, you can just leave a statement in this section confirming that you will provide reference details on request.

Final Tips

It might be a good idea to include information on your work status, and information such as 'requires sponsorship to work in New Zealand’ or is ‘authorized to work in New Zealand for any employer’. It may also be useful to mention your level of English and any IELTS or OET scores you have obtained.

Silver Fern Visa FULL

Posted by nabthatjobinnz on April 27, 2010 at 4:33 PM Comments comments (0)

We knew the Silver Fern Visa would be astoundingly popular, and difficult to get a place on, even if you were able to log on to the New Zealand Immigration website at 10am on April 27th.  We even expected that the limited 300 places would likely be filled within one hour of the Silver Fern Visa opening.

However, we were surprised to learn that all 300 places on the Silver Fern Visa were filled within 30 minutes!  That means if anyone did not log on to the website until 10.30am, or did not submit their application by then, they missed out.

From our understanding, there is still a chance that places may become available if any of these first 300 applicants are unsuccessful due to not meeting the criteria for the visa.  We therefore recommend regularly checking the website by logging on here: https://www.immigration.govt.nz/secure/default.htm.

If you were able to get your application in, we'd love to hear from you on the forum!

If you were unable to get your application through on time, it may be that you still qualify for migration to New Zealand under their Skilled Migrant category.  This web link is a great place to start your research: http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/work/skilledmigrant/ .

To qualify for the Skilled Migrant category for New Zealand, you must meet certain criteria, which includes:

  • Being aged between 20 and 55 years of age; and
  • Meeting New Zealand Immigration standards of health, character, and English language proficiency.

Your first step towards making an application for Skilled Migration in New Zealand is to submit an Expression of Interest, claiming points for your skills, experience, and other factors.

Next, if you have claimed 100 points or more on your Expression of Interest, your application goes into what they call the "Pool".  Then, every fortnight, all Expressions of Interest with over 140 points,  are selected for an invitation to apply.   If you have less than 140 points and meet other criteria, you may also be selected for an invitation to apply.  For example, if you have skilled employment in New Zealand.

If you receive an invitation to apply under the Skilled Migration Category for New Zealand, you need to be able to show evidence of the claims you made in your Expression of Interest.  For example, proof of your English language ability, documentation in regards to your skills, experience and qualifications, and medical and police certificates.

Receiving an invitation to apply for Skilled Migration, does not automatically mean that you qualify.  you still need to meet the criteria set out in this migration category, and this is the reason for sending through your official documentation as mentioned above.  Your application will then be assessed to determine whether you qualify.

Your ability to be able to settle successfully in New Zealand will also be assessed, as part of this process.

If you are found to meet all criteria under the Skilled Migration Category, you will be offered a residence visa or permit.  In some cases, you may only be offered a work to residence visa or permit, so that you can obraing an offer of skilled employment in New Zealand for up to nine months (similar to the Silver Fern Job Search Visa).  If you successfully find skilled employment during this time, your New Zealand residence application will be approved.

Get Ready For The Silver Fern Visa!

Posted by nabthatjobinnz on April 20, 2010 at 2:49 PM Comments comments (6)

The Silver Fern Visa in New Zealand is about to open, and places are extremely limited!

Our advice is to be well prepared before the day, and to get on the internet the minute the Silver Fern Visa Applications open in New Zealand.

PUT THIS IN YOUR DIARY: April 27th, 2010

The Silver Fern visa opens for applications on April 27th, 2010, and allows for 300 visas only.  The 300 places are allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis, and applications can only be made online through a dedicated Silver Fern Visa system.  No manual applications will be accepted for the Silver Fern Visa.  Once the quota of 300 visas has been met, the online system will not accept any further applications until the Silver Fern Visa re-opens on April 27th of the following year.

However, if an application is declined, withdrawn or cancelled, the place will go back into the quota, and allow for another person to apply.

There is a well set up system whereby you can check at anytime to see where the quota is at, by logging on here:https://www.immigration.govt.nz/secure/default.htm.  However, there is no system whereby you can be alerted when there are new openings - you will need to check the status yourself, regularly.

We expect these 300 spaces to go within the first hour of this visa opening.  We therefore urge you to be ready to apply as soon as this visa opens.

If you are already in New Zealand, unfortunately you are not allowed to apply for this visa - it is only open to skilled foreign nationals not currently in New Zealand.

The Silver Fern Visa is split into two different sections:

  • Silver Fern Job Search Policy; and
  • Silver Fern Practical Experience Policy

Silver Fern Job Search Policy

The first step in applying for the Silver Fern Visa is to apply for the Silver Fern Job Search Visa.  This visa will allow you to enter New Zealand for a period of up to nine months, to search for skilled employment.

There is a limit of 300 places per year on the Silver Fern Job Search Visa programme.

To qualify for this visa, you must meet the following cirtieria:

  • Be outside of New Zealand at the time of applying for the Silver Fern Job Search Visa;
  • Be aged between 20 and 35 years of age;
  • Meet the specified qualifications requirements;
  • Meet the English language requirements; and
  • Have sufficient funds to support yourself for up to nine months in New Zealand.

Please note: The Silver Fern Job Search Visa is similar to the Working Holiday Visa, in that you are unable to bring your family with you to New Zealand, unless they gain a visa for New Zealand in their own right.

The Silver Fern Job Search Visa only accepts applications and payment online.  You will also need to provide evidence that you meet the above requirements, to an Immigrawtion New Zealand branch for assessment and verification.  Click here for more information about the Silver Fern Job Search Policy.

Silver Fern Practical Experience Policy

The Silver Fern Practical Experience Visa is the second stage of the Silver Fern Visa process.

Once you have obtained your Silver Fern Job Search Visa, have arrived in New Zealand and have successfully found skilled employment in New Zealand, you may apply for the Silver Fern Practical Experience visa/permit.  This visa will then allow you to work in that employment for up to two years.

You can only apply for the Silver Fern Practical Experience Visa if you meet the following criteria:

  • You already hold a Silver Fern Job Search visa;
  • You have an offer of skilled employment in New Zealand that meets New Zealand's requirements; and
  • You hold occupational registration in New Zealand, if it is required for the job.

Although there will be no annual limit to the number of people who can apply under the Silver Fern Practical Experience policy, it is limited by the number of people who hold the Silver Fern Job Search visa.  Click here to learn more the Silver Fern Practical Experience Policy.

New Visa Making Migration to New Zealand Easier!

Posted by nabthatjobinnz on February 26, 2010 at 2:48 PM Comments comments (0)

I am excited to share information about a new visa programme in New Zealand that has been developed to attract highly skilled, young people to work long-term in New Zealand.

The new visa is called the "Silver Fern Visa", a scheme that will be launched in April 2010, and is aimed at foreign nationals who want to live and work in New Zealand.  To qualify for the Silver Fern Visa scheme, the requirements are as follows:

  • Must be aged between 20 and 35 years
  • Must hold a national diploma, bachelors degree or trade qualification
  • Must have at least two years work experience

New Zealand will only be issuing 300 Silver Fern visas per year, and therefore, you will need to apply early to increase your chance of being successful for this New Zealand visa scheme.

The initial visa awareded will offer the visa holder nine months in which to enter the country and obtain relevant skilled employment.  Once you have this employment in place, you can then move towards permanent residency in New Zealand.

The New Zealand Silver Fern Visa scheme consists of two sub-policies, offering a two-stage pathway to permanent residence in New Zealand:

  1. The Job Search policy; and
  2. The Practical Experience policy.

The Silver Fern Job Search Policy allows foreign nationals to enter New Zealand for nine months, while they seek skilled employment. As mentioned above, there will only be 300 visas issued per year.

To be successful for New Zealand's Silver Fern Visa, applicants must:

  • Make the application using the online system set up for this purpose
  • Be outside of New Zealand at the time of lodgement
  • Have a recognised qualification which is either a:

            - bachelor or higher

            - trade qualification and a minimum of two years’ work experience in that trade

  • Be able to meet English Language requirements
  • Have funds available to support their stay in New Zealand

New Zealand's Minister of Immigration, Jonathan Coleman, states:

"The new Silver Fern policy enables young people with proven potential to come to New Zealand for up to nine months to seek skilled employment. Once they find skilled employment, they will be able to stay for a further two years, while they apply for residence. This will create a pathway to residence for young skilled people, who want to come to New Zealand to further develop their careers, and potentially to settle permanently.

"The resume is critical to the success of gaining an interview.  This is the first point of contact with a potential employer and if you are not marketing yourself effectively, unfortunately it will end with an email or letter being received along the lines of, "thank you for your recent application for the position of [                ], and although we were impressed by your skills and experience, unfortunately on this occasion you have been unsuccessful...".", said Ms Myers.

This is where Nab That Job in New Zealand! can help.

Nab That Job in New Zealand! provides a resume and job search consultation service, including professionally written New Zealand resumes that are designed to get you interviews, and high impact New Zealand cover letters that will gain, and hold, the attention of your potential New Zealand employer.  These services cost between NZ$17 - NZ$247, depending on the level of service required.
